Hi, I’m Kathleen Lammens, author of ThinStead. For most of my adult life I’ve struggled with weight. I spent the better part of my adult life fighting fat. I embarked on a lot of different diets in order to try and lose the weight and feel better about myself.  I tried Weight Watchers, Atkins, Lindora, South Beach, the HCG diet, and I even went vegan for a while. Low-calorie, low-fat, low carb – you name it, I tried them all. But every time I lost the weight and quit dieting, I would only gain the weight back, and then some!
But not only was I frustrated by not being able to lose the weight, I was deeply unhappy with my life, too. Unhappy in my job, unhappy at not having a fulfilling relationship with a man, and unhappy with not having any real fun either.  Being overweight kept me from going out and meeting new people. I didn’t want to feel people judging me, and so I just stayed in. Most nights, I would sit home in front of the TV and eat too much pasta and drink too much wine. Pretty soon I got close to 200 lbs – and I’m only 5’ 3”!

Since I was so unhappy, the only real enjoyment I seemed to get out of life was from eating my favorite foods. While a lot of people prefer chocolate for their fix, I loved cheese, bread and pasta the most. I believed that macaroni and cheese was Heaven sent. When those carbs hit my brain’s pleasure centers, all bets were off.  I just couldn’t get enough of that cheesy, starchy heroin.  Not only did I enjoy eating food, I enjoyed cooking it, too. I collected probably close to 10,000 recipes from various magazines and kept them organized in binders by ethnicity. And I didn’t just enjoy cooking for me, I enjoyed cooking for other people in my life, too. Cooking was how I showed them my love.
Despite being depressed about my weight and my life in general, I did have one thing going for me…
I’m a seeker. Most of my life I’ve had a healthy curiosity about things. I’ve always been interested in psychology, holistic health and healing. I did a lot of research to find an answer to my weight problem, and I finally realized that the reason diets don’t work is because they don’t teach you HOW to become thin.
All Diets Are BS

That’s right, I said it. All diets are bullshit. Diets are a complete and utter failure. The whole concept behind dieting is flawed. First you starve yourself into submission, until the pressure of depriving yourself becomes unbearable, and then the doors blow wide open! And pretty soon you’re elbow deep in a tub of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream - again. Restrict, binge, restrict and binge some more. It’s called yo-yo dieting for a reason!
And the weight loss industry KNOWS this. In fact, yo-yo dieters are their cash cows – so to speak. The major weight loss chains make their multi-millions every year off of repeat customer sign-up fees, as well as sales of supplements, packaged foods and other products. And why do you think Weight Watchers offers a “lifetime” membership? It’s because they know diets are not a long term solution to your problem, and that you’ll most likely need to diet again – and again. Actually, their lifetime memberships sell very well, because dieters instinctively know that they haven’t learned the necessary skills to maintain their weight loss over the long term.
The Secret To Being Thin - Permanently

Ultimately, I came to realize that no diet, no pill, supplement or packaged food line was ever going to teach me how to become and stay thin. I began to understand that thin people thought, behaved and acted in a way that was completely different from me. And I was determined to figure out their secret. I knew I needed to change my thoughts, attitudes, and emotions if I was ever going to have any hope of changing my body, and my life, for the better.
As it turns out, thin people and overweight people DO think differently from each other. You see, overweight people tend to think alike. Very often they’re foodies who love talking about food, cooking and baking, and collecting recipes. Food is usually one of their main pleasures in life – if not THE main pleasure. If you try and take away their cookies, ice cream, pasta or chips, their world will collapse. For them, life simply wouldn’t be worth living without their favorite foods. If you think I’m wrong, just look at the Weight Watchers Facebook page and you’ll see it’s filled with posts of people looking for “low-cal” recipes for brownies, and wondering how many “points” are in a slice of meat lover’s double deluxe pizza. They’re simply trying to find ways to legally have their fix while they’re waiting for this god-forsaken diet to be over.
Besides being foodies at heart, overweight folks also tend to have a dislike for exercise. They can usually be found sitting on the couch watching a solid 5 to 6 hours of TV every night. Whether it’s because they don’t like to feel sweaty, or don’t like people to see them in workout clothes, or don’t enjoy huffing and puffing, they usually do not enjoy exercise. Now I can get away with saying all this stuff because I WAS an overweight person for most of my adult life. And all of the statements above described me to a “T”.
My 100 Percent Solution

In my search for a solution to my weight problems, I gathered together the fastest and most effective tools my research could find for rapidly changing my thoughts,  emotions and attitudes. I then developed written and mental exercises, which when combined with self-reflection are designed to get at the emotional roots of food cravings and bingeing behavior. I also addressed my negative feelings and attitudes about food, exercise, and nutrition.  In short, I re-taught myself to THINK like a thin person! Once my food cravings and compulsions were eliminated, and my negative attitudes toward exercise were released, I was free to make healthier choices. Weight loss became a snap after that. I’ve lost over 55 lbs permanently so far and I feel better than ever! For me, this discovery has been a blessing and a miracle.
